Thanks to funds provided by the NCVO and a donation of US $1,500.00 from the Class of ’69, the John Gray Memorial Fund Committee was delighted to award grants to 9 students studying for their first degrees in colleges and universities overseas. Six of the students are past recipients of the grant; all are maintaining high GPA’s and must maintain a minimum of 3:00 in order to continue to receive funding. The other three applicants are first time recipients whom the NCVO hopes to continue to support throughout their degree course. The assistance is intended for expenses associated with pursuing a degree such as books, accommodation and transportation and helps those who may have funding for tuition through government grants or other means but not for additional expenses.
The students who were given assistance are studying a wide range of courses including Business Administration, Cytotechnology, Hospitality Management, Accounting and Social Work.
The Grant is named in honour of the late Rev. John Rae Gray, a former NCVO Council and Executive Committee member, United Church Minister, and High School Principal, who passed away on 30th January 1992. Funds are granted each year to young Caymanian students who wish to attend college or university but have insufficient funds to cover their living expenses. This year a total of US $19,500 was distributed to applicants.
The Committee members that determine the grants are Charles Farrington, Elizabeth Schofield, Janice Wilson (NCVO, CEO) Alta Bodden-Solomon (NCVO Coordinator) and Olive Miller (NCVO Executive Board Member). Grant recipients are encouraged to become involved in their community through volunteer work.
The National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) is an independent, non-profit, charitable organisation dedicated to the care, education and well –being of children and families in need of support in the Cayman Islands.
Donations towards the John Gray Memorial Grant are always appreciated and can be made by post to NCVO, P.O. Box 1140, Grand Cayman, KY1-1102 or by contacting the NCVO on 949-2124.
